Start your Spiritual routine

The time is now

Congratulations, you’ve made a conscious choice to seek out more information about living a GOD Inspired life, and that’s the first step, “Seeking.” As mentioned in Jeremiah 29:13, when you seek God, you will find Him. The more you open your heart to Him, the more He will reveal himself and His will for you in extraordinary ways.

The key is consistency. This should come as no surprise when you think about it from a physical health standpoint. For example, we know from the medical profession and fitness experts that if we want a healthy and fit body, we need to eat healthy balanced meals daily and engage in some form of exercise at least 5 times a week. It’s the same with our spiritual health.

Just as consistency is critical in building and maintaining physical health, consistency is critical in developing and maintaining spiritual health. Tony Evans, author of the devotion, “Reflecting Jesus,” summed it up best when he stated, “God doesn’t want weekend visits with His kids; He wants full custody.” He explained that we connect and Honor God best when we align our thoughts, choices and perspectives with God’s word routinely. However, unlike starting a new exercise routine which can be daunting, starting a spiritual routine can be exciting; and I guarantee you will begin to see positive results immediately!

spiritual habits

Start each morning energized by taking a few minutes to say a prayer of thanks. Be sure to ask God to reveal how you can best use the talents he has gifted to you and help you discern which tasks are most worthy of your time. Additionally, daily devotions are also an important part of prayer life. Devotions are available from our home page. See suggested readings below for additional devotion resources.
Pray

Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

  • Start each morning energized by saying the Lord’s Prayer and take a few minutes to say thanks to our Heavenly Father for the gift of a new day (even if you are dreading it). Submit your plans to Him, so He will reveal how to best use the talents He has gifted to you and help you discern which tasks are most worthy of your time. Also, ask God to guard your tongue and to speak only words intended to build up others.
  • Prayer doesn’t have to be limited to only mornings. Pray throughout the day and/or in the evening, “And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people” (Ephesians 6:18). Your prayers may be to simply keep you calm and peaceful during stressful times, or you may find yourself praying for others to offer words of comfort or encouragement.
  • Daily devotions are also an important part of prayer life. Weekly devotions are available from our Devotion page. I also encourage you to explore daily devotion options, either in book form or online. Two popular devotion books that helped me get started, Jesus Calling and Jesus Always, both written by Sarah Young, can be a source of great comfort. She writes her devotions from the perspective of Jesus speaking to the reader. These writings stem from scriptures and the feelings God placed on her heart during her prayer time. If you prefer an online source, then I encourage you to seek out Lysa Terkeurst’s website proverbs31.org
  • The YouVersion Bible app offers another great option for online devotion plans. You can search plans by topic and choose from literally hundreds of plans.
Ask God to fill you with his Holy Spirit as you read the Bible daily. Choosing the same place and time to read will make Bible reading habitual. Find a paper copy or digital copy of the bible you feel comfortable with. My favorite paper version is the study bible from Quest. Also, download
read scripture

For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope. Romans 15:4

  • Find a paper copy or digital copy of the Bible you feel comfortable with. My favorite paper version is the study Bible from Quest. If you prefer an online version, I suggest downloading the YouVersion Bible. With this app, you will be able to choose the Bible version you prefer (i.e. King James, NIV etc.). Also, you can bookmark and highlight key verses, share verses with others, log notes, listen to text read aloud and much more. It’s a convenient way to catch up on your reading. During those extra minutes waiting for an appointment, I now find myself on my smart phone relaxing and reading my Bible app instead of stressed out checking my emails.
  • To take the guess work out of how to approach reading the Bible, browse the variety of bible reading plans online. If you like history, I suggest the chronological plan because the timeline helps the details flow like one long story. Some people find parts of the books Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy a bit dry, but they are important to understand how God intended His people to live in relationship with Him and one another. This sets the stage for our need for a savior.
  • As you read the Bible daily, ask God to fill you with His Holy Spirit. Choosing the same place and time to read will help make Bible reading habitual.
  • Mark your favorite verses, memorize them and place them where you see them daily. The “Words of Encouragement” Scripture cards are great for posting around your home or work space and are available from our Shop page.
  • If your reading plan gets tedious, don’t give up, try a new reading plan.
Set aside some time at least 3-5 days a week to write your prayers, thoughts, or life lessons learned. Ask God to speak his desires for your life through your words. Writing has been proven to be therapeutic and allows you to free yourself from the jumbled thoughts cluttering your mind. As a result, you'll feel more focused and a sense of peace. The God Inspired Journal is an excellent source to guide you through the process and is available to shop from the home page.

Serve others

Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God’s grace in its various forms. 1 Pet. 4:10
