I’m always amazed at how people (myself included) can have good intentions of doing what’s right and still get off track so easily. They find themselves in a predicament because they did something that went against their values; or they didn’t do something they knew was right because they lacked the courage to do so.
The Apostle Paul also experienced this. In Romans 7:15, he confesses, “I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.” Even King David, who loved God with all his heart, got himself in trouble when he failed to resist temptation and committed adultery. If devoted servants such as Paul and David struggled to “stay on track,” what can we do to keep in step with the Lord?
We find hope in Psalm 51:10
“Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.”
Life Application~
I love David’s humble request to his Heavenly Father in this prayer to purify his heart and renew his weak spirit with a steadfast spirit. A steadfast spirit is one that is unwavering and completely committed to trusting and honoring God. That’s the kind of spirit we should all pray for.
Imagine how different our daily walk would be if we had an unwavering spirit that completely submitted to God’s will and trusted Him in EVERY situation. We would more easily shrug off disappointment knowing God’s plan is for our good and His opportunity for us is just around the corner. Instead of passing up chances to volunteer our time or resources, we would offer up ways to serve the Lord with a gladness of heart and willingness to share his provision with others. We’d be freed from the bonds of insecurity, addiction, fear, guilt, shame, envy, bitterness, and rage. Instead, our heart would feel light and full of peace. Our days would be filled with more joy and less worry. Let us pray for a pure heart and a steadfast spirit.
Prayer~
Heavenly Father, remove anything in my heart that is not pure and would cause me to get off track. Fill me with a steadfast spirit so that I may stay in step with you Lord and fully experience your peace and joy. Give me the courage to do what you want me to do, and the strength to resist doing what I should not do. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
