Peace Over Me

We know life is often referred to as a roller coaster, a series of ups and downs. Life experience teaches us that when we’re at a low point, it will eventually get better. However, some of us have grown to expect that when we’re at a high point, we need to brace ourselves for the next fall. We may even find ourselves holding our breath, waiting for the next bad thing to weigh us down. We fixate on problems relating to our job, our significant other, our child, another family member, a friend, the government etc. This causes us to fear the unknown and leads to anxiety about the future. Suddenly, peace seems unattainable.

We can find hope in Psalm 112:7 ~

“They will have no fear of bad news; their hearts are steadfast, trusting in the Lord.”

Life Application~

On a recent prayer walk with a friend, I shared that sometimes I felt like I was “waiting for the other shoe to drop.” This anticipation of something going wrong made me feel anxious and was stealing my peace. My friend’s response gave me a reality check. She said, “In our lives we’re always going to be in a problem, exiting a problem or entering a problem; and we need to keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, not our problems, to maintain peace.” Then she read Psalm 112:7 aloud, and I realized I was having “trust” issues in my relationship with the Lord. I was sometimes submitting my will to his, but not on a daily basis. I was reminded that we must daily (even several times a day) lay down our expectations at the Lord’s feet, or the fear of the next crisis creeps in and steals our peace. Scripture and past experiences allow me to trust in the Lord; and trusting in the Lord leads to a peace that surpasses all understanding.

Prayer~

Heavenly Father, thank you for reminding me to fix my eyes on you and not my problems. Help me keep my heart steadfast, trusting in you so that I experience your peace and no longer fear the future. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
