Shine On

I remember singing, “This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine…” as a little girl at church on Sundays. I never really understood what light I was supposed to let shine, but I belted out the tune anyway. As an adult, I’ve had encounters with the light. For example, someone enters a crowded room and I notice their energy as my eyes are drawn to the light of their presence. You may have experienced something familiar. You’re drawn to certain people because there’s a kindness in their eyes or an unspoken acceptance in their smile. God’s light shines through their simplest gestures from volunteering at work to smiling at strangers.

On the other hand, most of us have also been in situations where someone’s negative energy repelled us. It could be their complaining or their cold unapproachable facade that pushes us away. However, what if we’re the ones repelling others with our darkness rather than drawing them closer to Jesus with our light?

We can find hope in Matthew 5:16~

“In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”

Life Application~

Some people may never, or vowed to never again, step into a church. The only Bible they may ever read is YOU! For this reason, Jesus knows how important it is for you to shine your light for others to see. Letting your light shine means taking action in whatever capacity God has called you. He wants you to show compassion to others who need your time, talents or other resources. He wants you to be approachable in work and social situations, share how He has brought you victory in moments of triumph, and confess how He has carried you through moments of weakness. When others witness you acting and speaking out of love for your Heavenly Father, His name is glorified and you have the privilege of altering someone’s eternity by leading him/her to Christ.

Prayer~

Heavenly Father, it’s your love that shines bright in me. Thank you for using this light to draw others closer to you.  With your help, we can spread hope into the darkest parts of our world.  In Jesus’ name, Amen.
